The WASH sector in Yemen is facing serious challenges including: water scarcity, high population growth, urbanization, insufficient funds, and lack of technical capacity.
In collaboration with other projects, doners, national and international NGOs Al-Thuraya conducts studies, training and capacity building to:
• Preparing training tools on relevant technical WASH topics and conduct trainings for WASH project staff and the communities.
• Assess shelter and physical infrastructure needs in IDP sites.
• Assess water and sanitation needs, available resources, and the capacity of existing systems in IDP sites.
• Promote access to adequate water and sanitation systems and increases targeted groups awareness and knowledge of hygiene practices.
• Promotes innovative water-saving methodologies and awareness in the agriculture sector through supports sustainable water resources management.
• Rehabilitate water supply sources in targeted rural areas and support urban water authorities with operation and management supplies to improve access to safe drinking water.
• Rehabilitate/construct latrines and sewerage networks.
• Improve hygiene knowledge and practices by training community leaders.
• Promotion volunteers, delivering hygiene promotion activities focused on social norms and behavioral change, and developing and distributing hygiene information, education, and communication materials.
• Establish Community Water Committees (CWCs) to enhance service providers’ knowledge of sustainable WASH programs; help Local Corporation of Water Supply and Sanitation and General Authorities for Rural Water Supply Projects to train and regulate private water truckers and vendors.
• Water filter (KATARAH) for the families with capacity of 30 letters.
