Livestock

Livestock is considered as the main source for farmers’ income and provides reasonable opportunities for many rural people to work. Yemeni farmers practice an integrated crop animal system in which they produce cereal summer crops to feed their animals and use manure to improve soil fertility.
The presence of cases of PPR (sheep and goat plague), Sheep and goat pox, the two major diseases of animals in the area, parasites infestation is wide spread with no control or protection. This situation has emerged in the recent years due to the poor vet services, lack of extension awareness and the inability of farmers to buy vet drugs. Leave alone the very high cost of vet from a private clinic if he was asked to come to diagnose and treat the different cases of diseases.
Moreover, many farmers have stated the presence of Screw worm cases in a lot of animals and are spreading rapidly in the region.
Most official livestock services have collapsed, including vet services, vaccination campaigns and extension services. Therefore, most farmers have sold the majority of their animals (others have lost all their animals), either by selling them to cover their families’ needs, or by animal diseases which killed a lot of animals in the absence of vet services.
